NID ADMISSIONS 2017-18
National Institute of Design (NID) is an ‘Institute of National Importance’ as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. As per the NID Act (18 of 2014), the institute is a statutory authority empowered to award its own degrees—Masters of Design (M.Des.) of two-and-a-half years duration and Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) of four-year duration. The Institute is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
NID Vijayawada is an independent autonomous institute under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offers four-year long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD).
NID Kurukshetra is an independent autonomous institute under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offers four-year long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD).
Admission to all of the design courses will be granted on the basis of a two-stage competitive exam. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates.
Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims
Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims will be conducted at various test centres across India. Candidates should note that appearing for the DAT Prelims or being ranked in the shortlist does not guarantee automatic entitlement to admission.
Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains
Candidates shortlisted after the DAT Prelims will be invited to appear for the Stage 2 DAT Main exams at one of NID’s campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru or Gandhinagar.

Eligibility Criteria
Master of Design (M.Des.): Candidates applying for the M.Des. programme (any discipline) must fulfill the following criteria:
Age Limit:
Candidates upto 30 years of age on or before 30 June 2017 are eligible to apply (relaxable by three years for candidates belonging to reserved category).
Indian Nationals in the general category and candidates in overseas category born on or before 30 June 1987 are not eligible for admission.
Indian Nationals in reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD) born on or before 30 June 1984 are not eligible for admission.
Educational Qualification:
Applicants must either have appeared for (results awaited), passed, or will be appearing for any of the following degree examinations before July 2017:
Bachelor’s degree in any discipline under the 10+2+4 (or more) system, from any university or institute recognised by law in India.
Diploma in design under the 10+2+4 system, from any university or institute recognised by law in India.
OR
Applicants must either have appeared for (results awaited) or passed, before July 2016, a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline under the 10+2+3 system from any university or institute recognised by law in India.
Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD): Candidates applying for the B.Des. and GDPD programmes must fulfill the following criteria:
Age Limit:

Applications for academic year 2017–18 are open to applicants who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2016–17 from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent.
(DAT) - Prelims & Mains: The Design Aptitude Tests will be conducted in two stages:

Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains

Test Centres for the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims: The DAT Prelims will be conducted in the following cities in India:
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Kurukshetra, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Panjim, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.
Candidates applying under the Overseas category (supernumerary) for M.Des. and B.Des. programmes will be required to appear for their DAT Prelims in person, which will be followed by the DAT Mains, at NID Ahmedabad.
NID reserves the right to add or remove any test centre and allot a test centre that may not be of the candidate’s choice. A city may have more than one test centre. Any request for change of test centre will not be entertained.
Design Aptitude Test (Prelims):
The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims primarily evaluates each candidate on the following abilities:
i. Knowledge
ii. Comprehension
iii. Analysis
iv. Creativity
v. Visualisation
The DAT Prelims consists of two parts:
Part I: Multiple-choice questions marked out of 70 points. This part has questions with one or more than one correct answer. The responses of this part will be recorded on an OMR sheet and evaluated digitally.
Part II: Subjective questions marked out of 30 points, with responses to be provided in visual and/or written formats.
The Design Aptitude Test (Prelims) consists of an examination for three hours duration and will be marked out of 100 points.
This is a pen-and-paper test conducted at the same time on the same day across all test centres.
The question paper is in English.
All questions are compulsory.
There is no negative marking.
Based on the DAT Prelims scores, separate merit lists shall be prepared for each category (OPEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD). Shortlisted candidates only will be eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam.
Design Aptitude Test (Mains):
Based on the scores obtained in the DAT Prelims, eligible candidates will have to appear for the DAT Mains.
The Admit Card for shortlisted candidates will be available for download only on the official NID admissions website (www.admissions.nid.edu).
NID will not provide accommodation for applicants appearing for the DAT Mains; therefore, the candidates must arrange accommodation at their cost.
DAT Mains for M.Des.:
The DAT Mains for this programme consists of two parts:
i. Studio Test: This may consist of tests in different formats such as drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions etc. This test will be marked out of 100 points and will be conducted in English.
ii. Interviews: The interviews will be conducted separately for each discipline, immediately after the Studio Test,at the same centre.
DAT Mains for B.Des.and GDPD:
The DAT Mains for these programmes may consist of tests in different formats such as drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions, presentations etc. These will be marked out of 100 points and will be conducted in English. The test centre will be NID Ahmedabad.
Final Merit List:
The final merit list for each discipline of the M.Des. programme will be generated category wise, based on the sum total of the weighted scores obtained by the candidate at each stage of the admission process.
The final merit lists for the B.Des.and GDPD programmes will be generated category wise, based on the sum total of the weighted scores obtained by the candidate at each stage of the admission process.
The weightage of DAT Prelims and DAT Mains will be as decided by the Senate of the institute.
Results for admission to NID for the academic year 2017–18 for M.Des., B.Des. (including overseas candidates) and GDPD will be declared only on the official admissions website (www.admissions.nid.edu) as per the schedule announced.
The candidates’ scores and ranks will be available for viewing on the website and candidates will have to log in to the site to view their final results. Separate result scorecards will not be sent individually to the candidates.
The scores obtained during the application process in 2017–18 cycle are valid only for admission for the academic year 2017–18. These scores cannot be used by any person/institution without prior permission of the National Institute of Design.
